Hmm. well that sucked, kinda. Ok, I installed Ubuntu on my server (the machine that is serving this page). It went pretty smooth and the webserver is working well. Still, I need to do a lot of work: mainly moving everything to linux. That’s a hell of a job! Basically I would need to migrate Serendipity and all other stuff I have. I would ditch Mambo because I don’t use it anyway (that’s why I have my blog right?). But I think that the 20gig I have in the server for Linux isn’t enough. So bottomline: I would need a new server that I can do a clean install on, Linux only at best. So I am going to look for a cheap P4 or P3 bare bones machine.
Now, about the glitches: I wanted to install Ubuntu as well on my 2.8Ghz P4. It was a pain in the neck! Ubuntu might be really nice but the lack of control during the install actually sucks. For starters, the Xorg X-server installs the wrong nVidia server for my 6600GT videocard. To fix that is pretty easy, I just change “NV” to “vesa” in the xorg.conf. After that it worked. But…. After I installed KDE the shit started: suddenly my keyboard and mouse were dead. And no matter what I did they would not work. Sheesh! Long story short: after messing around a lot (using Knoppix 5.0 – which has the same nVida bug) I even had to grab my XP cd and do a FIXMBR and FIXBOOT.
So now I still have a 20meg unformatted partition left… Maybe I will put SUSE 10.1 on it? But for now I’m done messing around with it.
