I hear you think: “why is this guy so obsessed with his car?”. Well, it’s not so much the car I obsess about, it’s more or less the service – or better said: the lack of service – that surrounds it. So last week I had some stuff fixed. The word “some” sums it up because not all of the problems got solved even though my garage said they did. In particular my A/C still is acting up. So now I have to go to the garage on monday morning again. And I’m pretty sure that they will refer me […]
Italian engineering
Sometimes you find that a choice you made turns out less good then one hopes. When I was picking my leased car about 1 1/2 year ago, I was pretty convinced that my sporty looking Fiat Stilo was a good choice. After all: it feels pretty sturdy, has good driving abillities and it didn’t seem as flaky as the older Fiat’s. The combination of the design and all the electronics it has on board (built-in GSM cellphone, GPS-navigation, CD-player, 7″ color screen etc. etc.), made me choose the Stilo over a Citroën C5, and the Peugeot 307. This last car […]
Who’s the BOB?
In Holland we have this rather dorky campaign about driving safely when you (or some friends) have had some alchohol to drink. The whole campaign pivots around an imaginary person called “BOB” which stands for “Bewust Onbeschonken Bestuurder”. This translates roughly into something like “conciously un-drunk driver” (I know: it sounds awfull and in Dutch its rather stupid also, but hey: what do you expect from a government sponsored campaign?). Anyway: one of the slogans they use is (again a rough translation): “You can always count on BOB to take you home (safely)”. The idea is that when you go […]

Things that make me go “hmmmm”
Hmmmm. I just spent a couple of hours reinstalling my server and also reinstalling my Sam2 audio software. For some weird reason my .php for the server wasn’t working anymore. I got a vague error about not being able to connect to the MySQL server. Well, if it ain’t broke, just get a larger hammer I always say 😉 So after spending 2hrs reinstalling all my stuff it worked again. By the way: did I mention yet that I got myself a Maxtor OneTouch 250gb external harddisk (FireWire & USB 2.0)? I made a backup of the server right after […]
Security upgrade part II: DoS attack
Sure enough, right after I tighten my security (see post from Sunday), some dumbass is trying to DoS Attack my server: Security Alert from Firewall Denial of Service “Code Red” attack detected. “The Great White Shark”
Ok, I have my eye on a ’78 Lincoln MkV. It looks great on the photo’s (look below for a sample). For more pictures look here. Problem is the price the guy asks for this pimpmobile: Euro 13.000. That is way to high for a relic like this, even though it might be in excellent condition. Anyway: I just love the sound of this car. Want to hear & see it too? Take a look at this video. Enough said! “The Great White Shark”(c) HvdG
Security upgrade
Since I’m running my own server, I’m constantly working on it. Tweaking stuff, making it run better, etc. etc. Well, I decided it was time for a security upgrade. I wasn’t happy with Norton Internet Security (constantly driving me crazy with unuseful info) and I have a very good router (Draytek Vigor 2900) with an excellent built-in firewall. So I decided to make good use of that and instead of putting my PC in the DMZ: I would use port redirection and open ports as an alternative. Thus leaving my network not open to just everything but just specific parts […]
Digital “restrictions” management
Those of you who read my previous blog about P2P, MP3’s and the crusade against people sharing music on the internet, know that I have a problem with the way the music and showbiz industry is reacting on the possibilities Internet offers. They are furiously trying repress people because they have no answer to the changing way people look at digital rights and such. In short: they try to close Pandora’s Box. Just as futile as trying to un-invent electricity. The funny thing is we have a saying in Dutch that is rather amusing and that accurately describes the way […]
