Suddenly Susan

It’s one of my favorite lines from The Devil’s Advocate, when John Milton (played superbly by Al Pacino) explains his success to Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves):  “Don’t get too cocky my boy. No matter how good you are don’t ever let them see you coming. That’s the gaffe my friend. You gotta keep yourself small. Innocuous. Be the little guy. You know, the nerd… the leper… shit-kickin’ surfer. Look at me.  Underestimated from day one. You’d never think I was a master of the universe, now would ya?” Well, that’s what happend when 47 year old Susan Boyle performed on Britain’s Got […]

Good Friday

I have to admit it: I always wanted to buy myself a big US car (in particular the Lincoln Continental Mark V), but driving home from work today in my friends convertible (a Mazda MX5 or ‘Miata’ as it’s known in the US) is making me rethink this. I was impressed with how smooth a ride it is. You can clearly hear us talking and even the radio playing in the background. Can’t imagine a more relaxed way to travel home: blue skies, sunny and a nice warm Friday afternoon.

Mobile me

So, as of this week I have 6 mobile phones in my ‘collection’. But I have owned exactly a dozen cell phones so far. And it all started in late ’95 or ’96 (I’m not 100% sure) when a Dutch company called Libertel started to compete with KPN (the only Dutch mobile phone provider at that time). They offered affordable rates at 0,25 (Guilders) cents a minute. So I got my first cellphone; an Alcatel HB100 or as I called it; “my litle brick”. Because that is what it looked like. It wasn’t the best phone and it had a fairly poor […]

Evergreens

Some movies will always remain classics. I happen to own “Spaceballs the Movie” on DVD with a lot of extra’s on it.

Escape from City-17

I’ve been a huge fan of the Half-Life video games series, ever since the original came out in 1998. It set some new standards in storyline and also graphics (altough it basically uses a modified Quake engine). I remeber how I hugely enjoyed the opening scene for Half-Life with its cinematic effect and how it pulled you right into the game (something I only enjoyed again when playing Call of Duty 4).  Half-Life 2 expanded in this and it even had a better storyline and looked great. I always thought that it might be worth making a movie out of […]

Commuter hell

You know what: it’s the small things in life that can annoy me the most. Like this morning; it took me 1hr. 19min. to cover 47 kilometers (29 mph). That came up to an average speed of… 35km/h (21,7 mph). Usually when it takes me that long, there has been an accident or it’s bad weather. No such thing this morning however. Just one of those things that makes you go ‘uhh?’ [nggallery id=2]

Two infinite things: the universe and man’s stupidity

The saying goes: “There are two infinite things: the universe and man’s stupidity.” Well, nothing proves better that this saying is absolutely right, than todays news. Even in a week with a plane crash and more news about the financial crisis developing, there is one Dutch politician that is able to dominate the Dutch news: Geert Wilders of the PVV. Why? According to the latest polls, made public today, Wilders right-wing political party would become the biggest political party in the Netherlands if elections would be be held today. Wilders reacted extatic to the news and even sees himself becoming […]

Come fly with me

I think that most people who know me, are aware of the fact that I’m not that keen on flying. Don’t get me wrong: I will get on a plane, I have my fear under control. I just don’t like flying. According to some psychologists it’s because people don’t like the fact that they are not in control. Whatever it may be, my heart skipped a beat this Wednesday when a plane from Turkish Airlines crashed about a mile short of the runway at Schiphol airport. Out of the 134 passengers 9 people died and 44 people got injured. There […]
