Hey, what is this switch for?

Oops! For those who doubt that Murphy’s Law is just a theory, I would jus say: read on. Some poor chap in Canada did something that he probably will regret for the rest of his natural life and surely will not put on his curriculum. He flipped a switch he shouldn’t and that costed 11 million dollars. Yeah, you read it right: 11 million! Oops! My bad! Apprantly the guy, who was working on installing a structural steel platform at an ethylene plant in Corunna, Ontario, mistakenly activated a process shutdown switch on this Monday afternoon thus halting the complete […]

del.icio.us

Ok, I’ll be honest with you. For a long time I did not see the point of the whole ‘community’, ‘sharing’ and ‘social web 2.0’ and ‘tagging’ thingy. So all that stuff went right past me. Until now. One of the things I found is sharing information is a neccesity in the line of work I’m in. Sharing links that point to good webresources for instance. So after visiting the Adobe 2006 Live event yesterday, I decided to finally set up a del.icio.us account. For good measures I installed the del.icio.us plugin to my blog, so now you guys can […]

The Dutch invade Germany

We don’t call it “het Oranje legioen” (the Legion of Orange) for nothing 🙂(Stuttgart, Germany Friday, June 16th, before the match against Ivory Coast)

Two down, one to go

Orange galore! I’m not a huge soccer fan, but when it comes to the World Soccer Cup or the European Soccer Cup, I do get a bit more exited. I guess I’m a bit more chauvinistic than I thought. Last sunday we played against Serbia – Montenegro and won 1:0. Last night we had to play against the Ivory Coast and it was a very exiting match. We scored 2:0 in the first half of the game and it looked like we were going to have a easy match. But just before the break, the Ivory Coast scored a goal […]

Mentos and Coke

Sometimes you wonder how people find out stuff. Like: who would try to see what happens when they combine Mentos candy with Coke? And more mind boggling: why? I confess I never knew about the whole Mentos & Coke thing, until a couple of weeks ago when my collegue told me about it and showed me a video. For those that just crawled out from under a rock: combining Mentos with Coke has an instant ‘geiser’ effect. So off course there are a lot of videos on YouTube for instance, that show the results of such dumb experiments. But there […]

Ok/Cancel

(click image) If you’re in the IT-business – especially anything web-related – and you have a few years under your belt dealing with projects, requirements, IT-staff, customers etc., you get to a point where you probably have many anecdotes for just about every situation: Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt. Still, it is nice to see there are websites around that succeed in touching things that matter in our profession (wether you’re a designer, projectmanager, programmer etc.) AND are funny at the same time. Today I came across a prime example of this: Ok/cancel. I feel I would do […]

And that’s number one

(Click me) Hurricane season has started again and it always makes me a bit anxious. Not that I live in the USA/Florida, but my girlfriend and her son do. And I have seen what the results of a hurricane (like Katrina) can be. So I am alway a bit nervous when they announce the next storm, especially when it heads straight for the Florida Panhandle where they live. Luckily Alberto did not do that much damage in Tallahasse. A few fallen trees here, a crushed car there and off course the obligatory power outtages. I just hope this hurricane season […]

Das Boot

World Soccer Cup or not, today was too beatiful to just sit behind the TV to watch the Dutch soccer team beat Serbia-Montenegro (which they did, but with a mere 1:0). No today I was destined to get out on a boat. Not just a boat, but an old army boat that my friend Sander bought over a year and a half ago. Ever since he bought it he never had the pleasure of enjoying it. He totally missed last summer. So when this week he finally had it working we had to celebrate. And we did! We set sail […]

School fieldtrip turns into real-life CSI

CSI My girlfriend Carrie (who happens to be in Milwaukee on a conference) told me a pretty bizarre story last night when we where talking about the 6-6-06 thing. It proves that, if there is a devil, he does have a good sence of humor. This is what happened:A teacher from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale (Florida) wanted to entertain het students as part of her summer school forensics class by setting out a fake CSI crime scenes under several ficus trees, using paper skeletons, fake weapons, notes, shell casings, and sunglasses. The kids then found a […]
