Some interesting figures today on the world of blogging: according to David Siffry, co-founder founder and ceo of Technorati, there is a huge growth in the amount of blogs. Apparantly Technorati tracks about 35.3 Million weblogs, and that figure doubles about every 6 months! Wow! The total amount of blogs is about 60 times bigger than three years ago. When you ponder the figures, you can see where the hype has kicked in. Out of all the blogs created only 55% are still actively maintained after three months. So I would account the other 45% to those who were caught in the hype but found out that maintaining a blog is actually more work then they thought. About 11% update their blog weekly (I try to do this too) which I think is not a lot. Off course with blogs gaining such popularity there is always a downside: blogs are frequently under attack by spammers (as is mine). But I think it is fair to conclude that blogging is the new way of keeping a diary to a lot of people, sharing their thoughts with the world.
Also interesting is the fact that so many people seem to share the same interest as can be seen when we look at the blogging ‘spikes’ – moments in the ‘blogosphere’ when people wrote about big events.

In general I would say that blogs have become the 22nd century’s digital equivalent to ‘the village pump’ where people exchange their ideas and daily experiences with life.
