For a while now I have been trying to migrate my website to Linux. Right now I’m running a so called WAMP server (“Windows, Apache, MySQL, PHP”) and I want it to become a LAMP server (you guessed it, that’s “Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP”). The reason for this is simple: stability and security. Windows has too much security problems and Linux just doesn’t.
So I have been messing around a bit with my SUSE 9.3 install. But boy, installing and configuring is one thing, getting all old data to the new server (the actual migrating) is another thing. I have been messing with MySQL, ftp and what have you, but so far it has been very time consuming and I am not at all satisfied with the result (- or lack of it really).
Not that my goals are that high set. I just want:
- MAMBO cms
- phpMyAdmin
- Coppermine photo album
- Serendipity blogging
- phpBB2 forum
How hard can it be? Well so far I have definately noticed (once again) how easy it is to achieve this stuff on Windows (XP) and how difficult it is on Linux. All because there are no user-friendly installation programs. It’s 99% console operated! And even though I consider myself a more than average computer user, it is pretty darn difficult! Also, all the time I’m trying to figure this out, my server is down (cause I did a dual boot installtion).
So that is pretty frustrating. But I will not give up – yet! I will just get my other server to do what it needs to do! So I would say:
— to be continued!
