Coke for money?

In my previous blog I talked about the Mechior abduction. Today there is some intresting follow-up. When the police apprehended the suspected mastermind behind the abduction on the Copacabana beach in Rio de Jaineiro (Brazil), in a joint opreation with the Brazilian police, they stated afterwards that they did not rule out the possibility of “more arrests”. So far no new arrest have been made, but recent events do shed some light on the curious ransom note for 300 kilo’s of cocaine.

It was leaked to the press that a friend of Claudia Melchers husband Bart V. smuggled drug money to Curaçao on behalf of the main-suspects, Lorenzo M.. This man, Jan V., is one of the apprehended suspects. He admitted that he was financially bankrupt and agreed to smuggle the money to Curaçao. According to him he would make six trips and smuggled at least 100k each time.

So this Curaçao-connection with drugdealers might explain why the kidnappers wanted 300 kilo’s of coke instead of money. I guess they expected that Claudia’s husband would have had the contacts to get his hands on drugs. The 300 kilo’s would have an estimated value of about 15 million Euro’s (although according to other sources in America 300 kilo’s is rated at about 4,5 million Dollars).

I’m sure that in a few weeks we will get more info on the case. It could turn out pretty surprising. Incidentally: the newspaper (Algemeen Dagblad) that published this info, is now getting sued by Claudia…
