Once again the current music industry in Holland (NVPI, SENA) has proved that they still live in the “stone-age”. Last Friday (the 4th) they announced that they will not condone music being dirstributed/used via/in Podcasts. Instead, podcasters using music in their podcasts, will have to pay rights for each individual song they use. Why not have some general rule? For individuals that have their own Internet radio stations (like myself) they do have a special arrangement. It is unclear why they do not have come to such a solution this time. Off course the use of music in itself in a Podcast isn’t illegal: there is enough rights-free music around. But what is more stupid: how do they propose to enforce this? Every day there are more Podcasters in Holland (just like the rest of the world). Another arrangement they made is where consumers in Holland have to pay a certain amount (depending on the memory) of money as some sort of ‘compensation payment’ when they buy a MP3 player! It is really incredible that this kind of stupid arrangements are even legal here! Imagine that back in the 1900’s car manufacturers had to pay the “horse and carriage” industry some compensation because cars were the new trend? It is totally ridiculous. They just try to keep an industry in business that totally has no answer to the new era of technology. If they spend more time in finding out what new business models they should adapt, instead of trying to prolongue the old (dead) ones, they would not be in such trouble. F*** SENA, NVPI and the RIAA. They need to pull their heads out of their arses and start dealing with a new reality!
