After experiencing a power outage last week, it was now time for the ADSL line to go down. Last night around 22:15 I wanted to look something up on the Internet, only to discover I had no connection whatsoever.
My first reaction was to reboot my router, but that did not work. Next, I checked the statuspage on the router. It showed I did not get an external IP-address from my ADSL router. So I went over to the closet where my modem is situated and discovered the DSL light was not on. Resetting it didn’t work either. Bollocks! Since Demon had e-mailed me a few days before that they were going to work on the network between 01:00 and 05:00 in the morning, I figured they might have started early and just let it be. This morning however, the line was still down. No quick checking of my e-mail before work for me.
After repeated calls to customer support from my work I finally got someone on the line that knew what he was talking about. And a few minutes later I had connection again. My webserver was still down, but I could get access through SSH with my Ubuntu linux machine and from there I was able to reboot the router. And now everything is up & running once again.
It is at times likes this I really feel that ‘being online’ is just as important to me as having water and electricity. Internet has really become a necessity for me and is no longer a luxury.
Funny enough: it was just yesterday I was telling someone how statisfied I was with Demon and their customer service!
