Way to go morons
There we have it: our Dutch government is resigning after losing the support of one of its coalition partners, D'66. D'66 pulled its support because Verdonk, known as "Iron Rita" for her tough stance on immigration issues, refused to resign over her treatment of Hirsi Ali. The announcement came after two days of debate in our parliament, where Verdonk did a complete U-turn on her stance on Hirsi Ali. Last night the debate lasted from 9pm in the evening till 5:30am this morning. Personally I'm glad it happened: this government had become a complete farce after all the fuzz about several subjects. It's the second time a goverment led by Balkenende trips over it's own shit. Oh well, we will have some new elections soon I guess. And I'm sure it's not going to be a good thing for the current government parties (CDA, VVD and D'66).

To go, or not to go. That is the question..
sorry soldiers
The whole issue is very problematic for the government because a recent opinion poll shows that half the Dutch population is against such a mission. Only about 38 percent thinks the Dutch should go. With some local elections coming up it seems political suicide for the political parties to vote in favor of the mission. Also the smallest government party, D66, has made it clear they are against the mission and they do have the power to turn this into a crisis which would lead to the fall of the current government.
All the pressure on the Dutch government doesn't come as a surprise: after the Dutch and the French voted against the European constitution in May 2005 other European countries are trying to get us back 'in line' so to speak. For instance: the Dutch are a member of the NATO and in fact the current secretary general is a former Dutch politician: Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. Pressure is coming from them as well.
As I see it there are three options: either the Dutch cabinet is going to fall over this matter - thus leaving the decision to another cabinet - or they are going to defy international pressure and will not send troops or they will give in to this pressure and defy the opinion of the Dutch people - which will certainly be political suicide for the CDA and VVD.
I guess this is going to be the toughest decision the Dutch cabinet has to make in a long time.

Europe: The Dutch Way!
Now here is a sign for you prime minister Balkenende: 61,6% of the Dutch voted against the EU constitution. Only 38,4% voted for it. 62,8% of the Dutch went out and voted. Thats not just a small sample, its huge! Maybe Balkenende (aka "Harry Potter" ) finally takes this signal serious. We DO NOT want to be part of an Europe were only the biggest countries rule!

Like a rabid dog
This has not been a particularly good week.
As always with events that happen far away, you don't feel that affected. Things only get a meaning once it gets too close for comfort. Such is the case with the brutal murder of the Dutch columnist and movie-director Theo van Gogh.

Attack on our Dutch Democracy
Theo van Gogh R.I.P.
Today - exactly 911 days after some political extremist killed Pim Fortuyn - the Dutch Democracy was dealt another blow by someone with extremist views. Just like the murder on Pim Fortuyn on may 6th 2002, this act of violence leaves the Dutch democracy in a state of shock.
Have we become another country like Israel? Are we going to be the next "Northern Ireland" of Europe?
