It’s been a long time since I have been impressed with a Dutch music band, but when I saw and heard “The Q4″ (also known as “The Quadraphonic Quartet”) on the Dutch daily show “De Wereld Draait Door” (aka DWDD) I knew I had to get my hands on their music.
The Q4 produces some of the best trip-hop/nu-jazz I’ve ever heard, and is one of my favorite 2010 releases. I have been playing them for a few days now and I still am impressed with their style and laid-back sound.
It was cool to see them show their creative process on TV and explain how they come up with a track such as “One of these Days”. You might argue that taking a million samples from other tracks and mixing them together, is not original, but I disagree. The result is definitely a new creation and not just some exercise in style.
For those that don’t know it; I operate my own online radio station that’s devoted to lounge, ambient, trip-hop, nu-jazz: iLounge, and I have added the Q4 to the new playlists. I must say they are just a great addition. The fact that they are Dutch is just an extra bonus to me. A lot of lounge, trip-hop and nu-jazz comes from France, Germany and other European countries.
Below is a (video)track from their album and the video from DWDD (Dutch only, sorry). Highly recommended.
