Going green

In case you’re wondering about the blog title: don’t worry, I have not turned into some eco-friendly, sandal wearing tree-hugger. No, I’m referring to something I ordered online this weekend: a Viridian 5XL tactical green laser/light sight. It is going to be a nice add-on for my H&K P30L that I bought about a month ago. For all purpose and intent it’s not practical in any way. In Holland you can’t own a gun for self-defense (unlike the US), so you can only use it at the range. And – maybe apart from action- – there are no real competitions where one can use it. So It’s just going to be something to use for the fun of it.

The Viridian is a bit special compared to other lasers. Sure, laser sights have been around quite a while (I think since the mid-eighties) but usualy they are red (635 or 670/650 nm). Around 2000 the first commercial green lasers came on the market . The operate around 532 nm spectrum which is a lot more visible to the human eye. The biggest advantage being that you can see a green laser better; even in daylight. Hence Viridian’s slogan: “red is dead”.

Green laser sights are getting more and more common, but they are without a doubt more expensive than red laser sights. The Viridian 5XL combines a tactical light with a green laser, which is an even nicer combo. It can be mounted using the picatinny rail (aka MIL-STD-1913 rail) on my HK P30L, but it also attaches to a weaver rail.

I will make a more indepth () review once I have received my X5L. In the mean time: below are some images from the 5XL and after that the current product catalog.
